10 Safety Tips on Essential Oils
So you have decided to use essential oils? Best decision ever! Here are a few tips on how to start you out on the right foot. Let me give you some info from what I learned during my Aromatherapy studies.
It is important to remember that essential oils for therapeutic use are highly concentrated plant extracts and should be used with caution. Essential oils are 50 to 70 times more potent than herbs. So a drop makes a significant impact, are you prepared?
As you learn how to use the essential oils through personal experience, you will be more comfortable using them and determine what works best for you. Here are some essential oil safety tips to help you along the way.
Make sure to use only 100% organic, pure, and tested essential oils. This step is crucial because you want to make sure that no pesticides, additives or other chemicals are present in your essential oil.
If you are using your essential oils for your health, skin, and home, you need to know or research where your essential oils are being produced. Invest some time now, then you have a safe start and can build out your line of essential oils step by step. If you have doubts, feel free to contact me.
- Research the brand you are about to use. Marketing doesn't cut it alone. Spend some time to get familiar. Bigger doesn't mean better.
- Ask for the GC/MS reports (gas chromatography and mass spectrometry testing) BEFORE purchasing the essential oil (no need to receive the GC/MS report after buying the oil, if you need to know the quality and chemical components beforehand). If a company cannot give you a GC/MS test report before purchase, something is fishy.
- Compare prices. Prices don't need to be high to get an excellent product!
- Look at the company's safety guidelines. Do they tell you, you can ingest oils? Not cool. As I mentioned above, they are incredibly potent and are just like medicine. Would you take any medication in potent quantities?
- Make sure the bottle is cobalt blue or amber brown glass.
- The bottle should have a label which gives you the following information:
- Country of origin
- The botanical species (Latin) name
- Batch number
- Date of expiration
Always do a patch skin test (at the inside of your lower arm) before using Essential Oils topically.
If redness, blistering, itchiness, or any kind of other irritation occurs, DO NOT use water. If redness or irritation occurs when using the essential oils topically, apply carrier oil, such as coconut oil, almond oil, and olive oil, to the affected area.
Water and oil do not mix; water will make it worse at that moment.
Discontinue use of any essential oil if you experience severe irritation or discomfort in the skin, stomach, or respiratory tract.
Keep away from the nose, eyes, and ears. Essential oils should not be used in the eyes, inside the ear canal, or the nose. In case of accidental contact with the eye, nose or ear dilute with vegetable oil again, NOT with water.
DO NOT consume an essential oil internally unless it is labeled as an INTERNAL oil to use or advised by a certified Aromatherapist or a doctor.
Always dilute, especially when in doubt. There are occasions where you can and should use an essential oil neat (without diluting the essential oil). Use a carrier oil such as Jojoba oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil, or olive oil when applying topically to your skin. Use an app such as Blend Precisely to determine correct dilution ratio and possible safety concerns.
Diluting essential oils also does not reduce the effects it has on your body!
Less is more. Essential Oils have not a better impact if you use more. 5-6 Drops in 1 fl oz/ 30ml is often all you need. Be conservative at first. You can always increase. Find a Dilution Chart in my Facebook Group or, again, use an app like Blend Precisely if you are more of a serious oiler :-)
Application of essential oils at the bottom of the feet is a perfect place for children and sensitive people, the soles have thick skin and less risk of irritation, but the benefits will still be achieved. Only a bit slower.
When you are pregnant, consult a certified Aromatherapist or a doctor before using essential oils. Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using essential oils if you are taking any prescription medicine. Some essential oils might interfere with your prescription medication.
Be safe around your children. Diffusing is often the most reliable way when small children are involved. Do not continuously diffuse. Few minutes are enough.
When applying it to their skin, go for the very safe and low dilution.
Don't use Essential Oils with children under 6 months.
Hydrosols are much safer. They have such small bodies, and these small bodies are doing a lot of work in the first two years. Some Essential Oils can be harmful to their development.
Always do a patch skin test with diluted essential oils. See point 2.
Do you have animals at home? While dogs can tolerate essential oils, cats cannot tolerate them as well. Cats are missing certain liver enzymes. Diffusing is the best method of use when having animals at home. Always leave a door or window open, so the animals can decide when to leave the room.
Essential oils that are known to cause poisoning in cats include oil of wintergreen, oil of sweet birch, citrus oil (d-limonene), pine oils, Ylang Ylang oil, peppermint oil, cinnamon oil, pennyroyal oil, clove oil, eucalyptus oil, and tea tree oil.
More on that, you can find on the Tisserand website.
Only use validated recipes. Nowadays, you will find a lot of essential oil recipes on the Internet. Which one to deem correct in dilution and which are entirely off remains a guessing game. Always start with a low amount of Essential Oils. You can always increase the drops when you don't feel any benefits.
Best is to find a reputable source of recipes or invest in one Aromatherapy Consultation.
As always, thank you for reading!
